Regilin is used to sew some clothing items. This material appeared quite a long time ago. Many craftsmen knew what regilin was used for in sewing - to create voluminous shapes for dresses.

Regilin: what is it, history

What is regilin? This fabric has been known since ancient times, since the 17th-18th centuries.

Sometimes it was a strong ring that was used to create dance and wedding dresses. This material was used to make frames to support the volume of skirts - it was put on like underwear. It began to be used as a means of support when sewing not only puffy skirts, but also corsets. This material allowed the wardrobe item to maintain volume. It was also called "crinoline".

Synthetic regilin is easier to care for and is cheaper. Crinoline is also used for ball gowns and performance dresses, and is still in demand in sewing today. It could be used to create beautiful folds in a skirt, showing off the beauty of the fabric and the garment itself.

Already in the 20th century, regilin could be found almost everywhere. It could be used not only for ballroom and other festive outfits, but also for underwear, an element of which was a corset. This was not only ordinary underwear - the material could also be used to sew medical underwear, intended for support and correction.

There are several types of regilin, and each has different applications and uses depending on the intended purpose:

• Corset crinoline "Whalebone" - used in the manufacture of wardrobe items that do not involve the use of straps.
• Ribbon regilin is a net woven from fibers. It is used when you want to create light waves in a skirt.
• Tubular is a more rigid material and is used when sewing items from heavy and dense fabrics, as well as for creating a frame.

Today, crinoline is used in sewing many types of clothing. Almost every needlewoman knows what regilin is, what it is used for and how to sew items with it, including:

The dense fabric also prevents clothes from losing their shape, and is comfortable to wear, unlike “bones”, which are also often used in sewing corsets.

Basic rules of use

There are several rules of use for crinoline fabric that will be useful when sewing things:

• Depending on the wardrobe item and the fabric from which it was made, different types of sewing on the regilin are selected (open, closed, with a frill, etc.).
• Only a soft regilin tape is sewn onto a thin, lightweight fabric, otherwise bulging folds will appear at the bottom.
• The product with the hemmed material should be ironed at low temperatures.
• To make the ribbon invisible, it is selected based on the color of the future product.
• It is also better to use colorless threads for sewing on the regilin, or threads that match the color of the ribbon and product for greater neatness.
• If you are going to make a hat using the ribbon, do not rush to cut off the excess. Changing the length can give a completely different shape to the item. For example, if the sizes match each other, but the edges are horizontal. If the length is shorter, the hat will take the shape of a cap. For wide brims, you need to take a long ribbon.
• The ends of the tape when used in a corset must be soldered. This is done so that the crinoline does not spoil the appearance of the fabric, does not tear it and does not cause discomfort to the human skin.

Methods of sewing to a sun skirt

There are several ways to sew a crinoline to a skirt to create beautiful "waves".

• The tape is placed on the front side at the bottom of the skirt and stitched on a sewing machine (approximately 0.6 cm from the cut).
• The sewn-on tape is folded to the wrong side and ironed together with the allowance that will cover the edge of the tape.
• Sew on the other, free edge of the tape.

To sew a skirt made of thick material, proceed as follows:

• The bottom is basted. The tape is also first applied to the front side and stitched (0.6 cm). The regilin can be bright.
• The tape is turned inside out and ironed.
• The second free edge is also stitched down the skirt.

Open processing

Open processing involves the use of regilin in such things that were made of thin and light material without lining. In this case, it is very important to choose the right shade of the tape so that it does not stand out as a bright spot on the clothes. Tapes can be purchased in completely different colors.

First, stitching is done along the edge of the item, on the front side. Then the item is turned inside out, ironed and the upper part of the tape is stitched. Overlock is usually not used. Lightweight fabrics that are suitable for open processing:

• Chiffon.
• Cotton.
• Fatin.

Closed processing

For a skirt with an asymmetrical hem, a closed method is used. This method is used with a lining or thick fabric so that the crinoline is not visible when worn. The lining is cut out, exactly repeating the shape of the skirt. It is also first sewn to the front side, as in the open version. Then the material is sewn onto the resulting allowance. After that, the lining is ironed to the wrong side and stitched with a sewing machine. Then you need to fix the part. To do this, turn the skirt right side out again, iron the bottom, and, stepping back from the edge, sew a securing seam.

Another option for closed processing is sewing tubular material directly into the hem of the edge of the item. There is also a method of inserting regilin into a specially made fold from the inside. It is used for sewing corsets.

Usage ideas

What else is regilin used for, besides sewing skirts and corsets? The material, both soft and hard, can be used in many areas, not only in sewing clothes. It is used in the manufacture of jewelry, accessories, toys. The use of crinoline in jewelry is possible due to the variety of colors of the material and its mesh structure.

To make a neck decoration, in addition to the regilin, you will need beads (of the same color as the mesh or matching in shade) or large beads. You can also use various additional fittings: metal inserts, decorative flowers, pendants, etc. Making such beads is quite simple: beads are placed in a tubular crinoline and, if desired, they are separated using crimps (marking beads) or caps for them. Then it is secured at the ends, connecting rings and a chain are threaded through. You can decorate the future beads, for example, attach a pendant. Such beads will be a good addition to the outfit. Hats can be made from crinoline of different textures. The base can be a soft white material, and a harder one will fix it. Colors are also selected depending on taste.

Additional information. In addition to hats, various hairpins are made from rigelin. Here, you can use 2 materials - satin ribbon and rigelin of the desired color. The mesh fabric is folded in the form of a bow or petals, and a rose is made from satin. The bow is attached to the base of the hairpin, and then the flower is fixed on top. You can make either one large bud or many small different flowers. Then, if desired, rhinestones or beads are added to them, this will be "dew".
