Types of satin for bed linen: varieties and compositions of fabrics

Satin is one of the most attractive, durable and pleasant to the body materials, which are made from natural cotton fiber. This fabric looks noble and, as trivial as it may sound, expensive. Even in the last century, this textile was called "cotton silk". The cost of satin has always been lower than silk or poplin, although in terms of aesthetic characteristics it is not inferior to them at all.

The material is similar to satin in its glossy shine, but at the same time it retains the warmth of cotton fabrics. Important information is that the word "satin" is not used to describe the origin of the fiber (cotton or synthetics), but by the method of weaving the material. Therefore, synthetics with their special weaving can also be called this way. However, based on tradition, satin is still called a material made from cotton.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of cotton satin include:

  • The fabric is hygienic, it absorbs moisture perfectly. The body under this material "breathes" due to good air circulation.
  • Thermal conductivity allows the body not to overheat in the summer. In winter, with the help of satin material, you can maintain an optimal temperature for the body.
  • The softness, lightness and airiness of the material give a feeling of comfort.
  • Colors printed on cotton fabric last for a very long time.
  • The strong weave of the material allows for a large number of washing cycles without losing the density of the fabric. Its characteristics may change after 350-400 washes.
  • The material does not wrinkle. During drying, natural factory draped folds are formed.
  • This material is distinguished by its environmental friendliness and hypoallergenicity.

It is difficult to say anything about the disadvantages of this fabric, since it does not have any obvious disadvantages. Some buyers are unhappy with the sliding properties of the material, which it has at first. It is not very comfortable to sleep in silk clothes on satin, so it is worth considering this before buying pajamas or bed linen.

Satin is cotton or synthetic

As mentioned above, the word "satin" itself means only a special way of weaving fibers. However, traditionally it is customary to call natural cotton fabrics this way.

Note! Satin is a material for bed linen that is characterized by excellent quality and quite high cost.

Mako-satin

This type of eco-fabric is the densest, as the number of threads in it exceeds 220. At the same time, the finest fibers are selected to create mako-satin, so that the resulting material is durable, but at the same time thin and airy.

Printed satin

The consumer qualities and aesthetic characteristics of a fabric are greatly influenced by its density, namely the number of thread interlacings per 1 cm2.

Printed material is a satin fabric for bed linen, which has up to 170 weaves, and the pattern in this material is applied directly to the material. Due to this, the pattern can be selected separately for the pillowcase and separately for the duvet cover.

Note! If you are wondering "what kind of fabric is satin?" bed linen made from this material will pleasantly surprise you.

How to choose satin bed linen

4 basic rules to follow when choosing bed linen:

  • Pay attention to the packaging, namely the composition. The fabric should contain 100% cotton (this is what distinguishes calico). After that, you need to look at the density, i.e. the weight per cm2 or the number of knots on the same area. The optimal number of knots is 120 or 12 grams.
  • The presence of mercerization (sequential treatment of cotton fibers with acid and alkali) is a guarantee of the quality of the soft material.
  • Processing cotton allows the fibers to become denser.
  • Strength indicator - not less than 120 threads per 1 square centimeter. You can check the density of the material by shining it in the sun. If the outlines of objects are not visible through the fabric, then its quality can be considered good.
  • Finally, you need to check the smoothness of the material. Its texture should be uniform. Only with such fabric will the bed linen last long, satin is expensive and its quality needs to be checked meticulously.

Features of washing

The optimal water temperature for washing is 40-60 °C. The variation in indicators is related to the type of item, the density of the fabric, the nature and structure of the contamination. When washing pillowcases, sheets and duvet covers, it is best to avoid powders and other detergents that contain bleaching components. This can lead to damage to the fibers of the material, which will subsequently contribute to its thinning, decrease in density and strength.

Note! It is best to use regular machine washing powders that are used for colored laundry.

Among other conditions that affect the quality of fabric after washing, it is worth noting:

  • Before washing, you need to fasten all buttons, fasteners and zippers, and turn the duvet cover and pillowcases inside out.
  • It is forbidden to wash stripe satin fabrics together with synthetics - microfiber, polyester, etc. The loss of silkiness and the appearance of pellets are guaranteed, since the fibers of other fabrics will cling to the satin threads.
  • During washing, the machine drum should be ½ full.

  • Before you start washing, you need to check if there is enough space for the bed linen in the drum. The material should not take up more than half of the total volume, since wet satin increases significantly in volume. A tightly packed drum of the machine will only worsen the quality of the wash.
  • Embroidery can be ironed separately.

  • Satin bedding decorated with embroidery does not require additional cleaning.
  • Satin should be spun at low speed. To remove residual water, it is better to place the laundry in the sink, the moisture will drain on its own.

After washing, satin does not need to be ironed, as the strong weave and elasticity of the fabric do not allow various folds and small "wrinkles" to form. When ironing, it is best to use the "cotton" mode.

The use of an iron may be necessary only for ironing areas with embroidery or distinctive structure. The iron should be heated to 80-90 degrees. For ideal smoothness, special conditioners can be added to the machine drum in advance.

Where to buy and prices

The cost of a good double satin bed linen set ranges from 7 to 12 thousand rubles. Prices are valid as of May 2019.

It is best to buy such products in specialized stores. Before buying, you must ask the consultant to show the manufacturer's quality certificates. If possible, it is better to refuse to buy online or use cash on delivery so that you can look at the fabric and touch it before buying.

It is important to remember that the fabric should not have a strong smell, uneven structure, uneven seams or threads hanging at the edges. When buying a set, it is better not to spare money, so as not to stumble upon a cheap fake.

Reviews

Love, 56 years old

The purchase of new pillows and blankets became the reason for buying a new set of bed linen. I chose satin based on the characteristics of the material density, durability and lightness of the material. I am completely satisfied with my purchase.

Ekaterina, 29 years old

I decided to buy satin bed linen after the birth of my child. Satin is easy to wash, does not require ironing and is very pleasant to the touch. I liked that there was no unpleasant chemical smell of dye when I unpacked the linen and the fabric did not slip. More than 10 washes did not change the quality of the material at all.

I have very sensitive and problematic skin, so I approach the choice of bed linen very meticulously. Mako-satin is the ideal fabric for me, as it is an environmentally friendly product, and the variety of color solutions allows you to decorate the room. The price of the product is quite high, but it fully justifies itself.
