Felt is a dense woolen material that can be cut into pieces or rolled into a roll. It is made from soft wool or animal down, but it can also be artificial. Beginner needlewomen often have a question about what type of felt to choose and how to use it.
Using Felt to Make Toys
Felt is used for creative crafts, toys, stickers, magnets. Compared to other materials, it has a number of advantages:
- a wide variety of colors;
- available in various sizes;
- no difficulties in use (it can be easily sewn or glued);
- the edges do not crumble, so they do not need additional processing;
- there is no back and front side.
The material has different thickness and fabric composition. In needlework stores, it is offered in thicknesses of 1-5 mm. Felt 1-2 mm is ideal for cutting out small details. For making the base of the toy, it is better to use a thicker material that holds its shape well.
Types of felt
Acrylic felt is very popular among creative people because it is inexpensive. But when making products, there is a "slipperiness" of the fabric, shine, "creakiness" - all these indicators are characteristic of synthetic materials.
Polyester felt is used to sew things that last a long time. Polyester fiber provides high strength of the material. It does not fade, does not burn out, does not change color. A polyester toy given to a child will be in good condition for a long time.
Modeled is a unique type of felt with molding properties. Thanks to a special impregnation, the material can be given a variety of shapes.
Please note! Felt made of polyester is well suited for making children's toys. However, if there is a need to qualitatively decorate an album, then it is better to take a semi-woolen material.
Stages of creating a toy angel
For working with felt, it is better to use floss threads. With their help, you can independently create a pattern on the fabric. Recommended fillers are hollow fibers and synthetic padding, since they retain their shape well. Felt angels for the Christmas tree can be made from material of different colors or just one.
To work on the toy you will need:
- scissors;
- marker or gel pen;
- series of threads (thin and thick);
- a piece of soap;
- set of needles;
- glue (PVA and textile);
- filler;
- beads, beads.
Please note! To cut small round pieces, it is better to use a punch for installing eyelets. For cutting thick felt, a rotary cutter works well.

- Felt in various colors (can be replaced with felt dry cleaning cloths, which can be purchased at any hardware store).
- Sewing threads and needles.
- Threads "Iris".
- Cotton wool.
- Moment glue or glue gun (whichever is more convenient).
- Satin ribbon or organza 50 mm wide.
- Beads, decorative buttons and bows for decorating toys.
Step-by-step instructions for making New Year's angels:
- Cut out the body, arms and wings from paper.
- Transfer the patterns onto felt of the desired color.
- We cut out all the details.
- Sew with a chain stitch, leaving small holes so that the pieces can be filled with cotton wool.
- Sew up the holes with a chain stitch.
- Take the “Iris” thread and cut it into equal pieces according to the length of the souvenir angel’s hair.
- Glue the "hair" to the head.
- Embroider the face elements.
- Cut two rectangles from organza "by eye" for the angel's puff sleeves. The longer the rectangle, the more magnificent and voluminous the sleeve will be.
- Gather the sleeves at the top and bottom, sew and put them on the handles. Fix with glue.
- Make a dress in the same way, decorating it with a beautiful ribbon, bow or decorative buttons.
- You can wear beads around your neck.
