Petticoats have been in fashion for quite some time. They are used to create beautiful volumes in dresses and skirts. Such petticoats are used for various events or performances by both little girls and adult girls. In addition, they can be a separate element of the wardrobe. This article presents several options for sewing such a product.
Necessary materials and tools for work
Tulle fabric is very light, but it also holds its shape well and is well suited for folds. The material is very elegant, so it is used for sewing things for children's parties or weddings.
Please note! Tulle comes in several types and can have both large and small cells, the stiffness of the fabric depends on their size. Tulle is also easy to dye and has a wide range of colors.
A thick and lush petticoat made of tulle goes very well with a sun skirt. The medium length of the skirt, the lush rolls of material on the matte tulle - all this creates the image of a hipster. A regular lush petticoat will be in the form of a rectangle, and its top will gather at the waist.
A lighter, smoother petticoat looks great on a mid-length or slightly below-the-knee dress, creating a cute look without restricting movement.
Floor-length dresses always use tiered petticoats that widen from tier to tier. There is also such a type as a petticoat with frills. It has a small disadvantage - a large consumption of fabric, but it is worth it. There are no special rules for sewing or choosing a material, basically the decision must be made based on the style of the dress, as well as the fabric from which the petticoat will be sewn.
DIY Tulle Petticoat: Step-by-Step Instructions
There are different ways to sew a petticoat.
Classic version
For the classic sewing method, you need to take measurements and prepare everything you need for work. The choice of fabric color depends on the preferences of the person who will wear the item. It is best to choose tulle of the same color as the skirt or dress. But the material can also be painted with acrylic paints to match or make a chic gradient on the fabric.
Sewing tools:
- wide elastic band;
- sewing machine;
- needle, thread, scissors, measuring tape;
- set of pins.
First, measure your waist and multiply by two. The length will be arbitrary. A petticoat made of stiff tulle can be up to three layers. To sew it, fold the tulle, clamp it and stitch along the entire length, closing the circle. Then fold the top part back by 3 cm and stitch, leaving space to insert the elastic later. Hook the elastic with a needle, insert it into the designated place and sew. Distribute the fabric over the entire elastic. Everything is ready.
Lush
A skirt like the one in the photo will be made of tulle frills along the entire length.
Materials required for sewing:
- 2 m of base lining;
- 5 m of tulle.
Important! The base is needed so that the petticoat is practical and comfortable to wear, and also to make it easier to attach the tulle.
You need to cut four identical parts from the lining. Their dimensions can be calculated as follows:
- the length is 5 cm less than the length of the skirt;
- The width depends on the style, but should not be too narrow so as not to restrict movement.
The cut out parts need to be sewn together into one piece.
Cut 1.5 m by 30 cm pieces of tulle, fold them in half and sew them into the base in even folds from bottom to top, layering them so that the top one covers the bottom one by 3 cm. The total number of frills needed depends on the length of the skirt.
For a dress in the style of dudes
Materials required for sewing:
- 60 cm of material for the skirt;
- 60 cm elastic;
- 300 cm satin ribbon;
- approximately 3 m of tulle.
The base of the skirt should be made in the same way as in the previous version. The skirt can be sewn using any pattern you like. The tulle patches are cut to a width of one quarter of the length of the entire skirt and with a length of four waist measurements. The layers should be doubled.
On the bottom strip, make a rim of satin ribbon, stitch along the short side. Then you need to make folds by pulling the stitching thread. And so with each detail. Then they need to be sewn together and stitched to the base of the skirt. The dress with a petticoat like those of the hipsters is ready.
How to sew a petticoat for a children's dress
First, it is worth understanding the main details of this product. If you have no experience in sewing products, then you need to think everything through in advance so that the dress does not rise up, and the petticoat is not visible from under it, does not scratch the girl's skin and does not interfere with her movement. First, you need to decide what fabric will be used in the work. In this case, it is better to choose tulle. It creates volume well and holds its shape, and is also very durable. Then you need to decide what volume is preferable.
It also depends on the fullness of the skirt or dress that the petticoat will be sewn under.
The best style for sewing is "Tatianka". Basically, such skirts are sewn from light materials, because it has many gathers at the waist. But in fact, the rigidity of the material will depend on the rigidity of the dress or skirt itself. A petticoat for a child made of tulle will look very beautiful, especially if you make it in several layers for maximum volume.
When making a petticoat for a child yourself, you can look at ready-made options and add a yoke to the petticoat. Each layer of tulle should be stitched under the base of the product or gathered on a line.
Next, pin the tulle frill and base strip evenly, then sew everything together on the sewing machine. You also need to determine where the middle of each side is and make an alignment of the fabric pieces.
Please note! The distance to which the base will need to be assembled should be about 9 cm.
The gathers are placed under the machine foot and slowly stitched. To begin with, of course, it is better to try to connect the tiers with each other. Then, when stitching, the tulle - the main creator of volume, will not fly off when overcasting. You can also take a ready-made crinoline and stitch the tulle onto it.

How to Decorate a Girl's Petticoat
To make the petticoat sparkle, you can decorate it in an original way so that no one else has it. In this case, you need to give free rein to your imagination. For example, the edge of the skirt can be sewn with a beautiful satin ribbon.
You can sew small flowers made of fabric or leather onto the petticoat. You can also decorate it with beads, feathers, rhinestones, and beads.
