Sequin fabric is quite difficult to work with. Before sewing anything, it is worth considering that the fabric itself is very bright, the design should be as discreet as possible.

The fewer darts and relief seams, the easier it will be to work with it, and the finished product will look no worse. Each stage requires its own approach:

• Cutting. If your hand is not yet trained, then you should not immediately buy expensive material. It is better to take a budget option for training and experiment. After you get a satisfactory result, you can move on to good fabric. If the sequins do not fill the entire fabric, but are located on it in a pattern, it is worth cutting on the front side to immediately see the whole picture. It is better to do the marking with a thin contrasting thread. Seam allowances must be freed from sequins, but you need to fix the remaining ones so that they do not crumble further. The remaining decorative elements should not be thrown away until the product is completely ready, they may come in handy.
• Sewing. It is not much different from sewing regular clothes. Before you start working, be sure to look at the base of the fabric and, based on this, select a needle. It is strictly forbidden to sew on sequins. Firstly, this can break the needle, and secondly, the decorative elements themselves, which will ultimately spoil the finished look of the product. If the sequins are glued and you can’t get rid of them, then you need to move them apart and stitch between the rows. The lower edge is always finished with a facing or tape. This is necessary so that the plates do not scratch your legs and in no case tear the tights.
• Wet-heat treatment. Since the fabric is quite unpredictable, it is recommended to leave a small piece of the product. Treat the fabric only from the inside. Do not heat the iron too much, do not use steam. There are sequins that lose their color after treatment, so it is better not to iron such fabric. To avoid trouble, the only sure option is to try on a small sample.

How to care for the material

Sequin fabric itself is very delicate, which makes it difficult to care for, so you need to know how to do it correctly:

• Avoid machine washing, especially if sequins are glued on;
• wash only in cool water with neutral powder (for example, baby powder);
• Do not use bleach or fabric softener to avoid discoloration of decorative elements;
• do not keep the product in water for a long time, maximum 10 minutes;
• it is necessary to dry it horizontally so that water does not flow, you can pre-dry the item with a terry towel, if you hang it vertically, there is a chance that the product will stretch under the weight of the sequins;
• Such items do not wrinkle, so it is better to avoid ironing, and if it is really necessary, then only at a low temperature.

If possible, it is better to take items with sequins (especially if they are not cheap) directly to the dry cleaners so as not to spoil anything and the item does not lose its appearance.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Sequin Fabric

Like any other material, it has a number of advantages and disadvantages. As for the advantages:

• insanely beautiful appearance that attracts attention;
• looks rich, appropriate for any event;
• wide range of applications - clothing, footwear, accessories;
• bright and not banal, especially the fabric with double-sided sequins;

Flaws:
